Avoiding AI-Assisted Answers: Adding an Honesty Statement
Many teams ask us: How do I prevent candidates from using AI tools like ChatGPT during the interview?
The truth is, using ChatGPT isn’t always negative. In some cases, it may even be helpful. But in a pre-screening context, what you typically need is the candidate’s own, unassisted thinking.
Unless you make this expectation clear, candidates may reasonably assume that using AI is acceptable. And as with many things in life, the most effective solution is not technical, it’s human. 😊🙏
The best solution: Add an honesty statement
The simplest and most effective way to ensure genuine answers is to add a short honesty confirmation as the very first question in your Hireflix interview.
Recommended Honesty Statement
We suggest adding a question like this:
Title: Confirmation of Interview Integrity
Question: For this interview, it is very important for us to understand your own thinking and how you would respond without the help of external tools. We are not against AI, we fully recognize its value. But for this interview, we need to hear your unassisted answers in order to evaluate you fairly.
Please confirm on video: “I confirm that I will answer these questions honestly and without the help of AI or external tools.”

Pregunta: Para esta entrevista, es muy importante para nosotros entender tu propio pensamiento y cómo responderías sin la ayuda de herramientas externas. No estamos en contra de la IA; reconocemos plenamente su valor. Pero para esta entrevista, necesitamos escuchar tus respuestas sin asistencia para poder evaluarte de forma justa.
Por favor confirma en vídeo: “Confirmo que responderé a estas preguntas con honestidad y sin la ayuda de IA o herramientas externas.”
Why this works
This simple step works extremely well. It:
- Sets clear expectations from the very beginning
- Explains why unassisted answers matter
- Creates a moment of commitment on video
- Makes it much harder to misuse AI afterward
- Eliminates ambiguity if a candidate is later found using external tools
In other words: this one action provides the biggest impact with the least friction. It’s simple, it’s fair, and it’s highly effective.
